What is Capacity Rating & How is it Determined?
Roller grinder capacity refers to the maximum amount of material processed within a specific time frame. Typically, this rating is measured in tonnes per hour. However, several factors can affect roller mill capacity, including the bulk density (weight per cubic foot) of the material and its friability (how easily it crumbles or breaks down).
Other crucial factors include the machine’s available surface area for processing. They also include the horsepower available to that machine, and the surface feet per minute of the rolls, which indicate the speed they’re spinning at. By taking all these factors into account, we can determine a roller grinder’s capacity rating with a high degree of accuracy.

How to Increase Roller Mill Capacity
The speed of a roller mill can be adjusted using various feeding mechanisms. These include a manual gate or a feed roll. By opening or closing the gate or adjusting the feeder speed, the capacity of the roller mill can be altered. However, it’s crucial not to exceed the machine’s rated capacity. When upgrading to a larger machine, both diameter and roll length can also be increased.
An example of this is a 12-inch diameter by 36-inch long roll will have a higher capacity rating then a 9-inch diameter by 30-inch long roll.
Additionally, the number of roll sets can be increased to provide a finer particle size or to increase the available surface area within the machine.
By taking advantage of these options, users can achieve the desired roller mill capacity while optimizing their grind profile and maximize their available floor space.
Why Understanding Capacity Rating is Important
Overworking a machine to achieve a desired roller mill capacity greater than what the machine is rated for can lead to higher maintenance costs and unhappy customers. To prevent these issues, RMS believes it is essential to accurately assess each of our customers’ needs and recommend the appropriate machine size based on their specific requirements.
It’s vital for us to understand what our customers are trying to achieve to determine the appropriate machine size. When providing a quote, we stay away from overselling and undersizing by considering their facility’s layout and location, and their desired output.
Oversizing can lead to over-payment and under-utilization of the machine. We aim to avoid leaving a bad taste in the customer’s mouth by overselling. However, undersizing the machine can also have negative consequences. If the machine is too small, there may be concerns regarding grind quality.
