Three ways to get your rolls serviced
Choose the right path back to performance.
The best service option depends on your roll condition, machine, spare-roll availability and downtime window. RMS helps you choose the practical path — not a one-size-fits-all package.

Fast turnaround
Same-Day Sharpening
Drop your rolls off in the early morning and pick them up by the end of the same business day. Ideal when you are running close to your spare-roll margin. Depending on the condition of the rolls, additional time may be required for bearing or shaft work.

Flexible shop service
Ship & Sharpen
Ship your existing rolls to our Harrisburg, South Dakota facility. Rolls are typically in our shop 5 to 10 business days, plus transit each way. We restore them to your corrugation specification, run quality checks at every stage, and return the same rolls ready for installation.

Reduce maintenance burden
On-Site Roll Exchange
Our technicians arrive with a refurbished set of rolls, install them, restart the mill alongside your operators, and take your worn rolls back for reconditioning. Like exchanging a propane tank: you receive a ready-to-run set while your originals are restored.
| Same-Day Sharpening | Ship & Sharpen | On-Site Roll Exchange | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turnaround | Drop off in the morning, pick up by end of day | 5 to 10 business days in our shop, plus transit each way | Scheduled to fit your production calendar |
| Your downtime | However long your own roll change takes | Length of the full shipping cycle, unless you run spares | Hours, not days |
| Who changes the rolls | Your maintenance team | Your maintenance team | RMS technicians |
| Best for | Plants within driving distance of Harrisburg, SD | Plants anywhere in the US or Canada | Plants that cannot absorb extended downtime or carry spare rolls |
| What you need | Transport and in-house roll change capability | Ability to pull and reinstall rolls; a spare set is recommended | Nothing — RMS brings sharp rolls and installs them |
We service RMS and non-RMS machines
Prevent downtime. Improve performance. Extend equipment life.
Know what wear is costing
When the edge wears, performance follows.
A sharp roll comes to a knife-point at the peak of every corrugation. As that edge wears flat, the mill loses traction on the material, the motor stops pulling rated amps, and the same batch takes longer to run. The result is lower throughput, inconsistent particle size and reduced grinding efficiency.
Five signs your rolls may be dull
What RMS can evaluate
Available on every brand we service
Available on selected brands — see the service table above
Not every grinding problem is a dull roll
On-site troubleshooting.
When particle size drifts, throughput falls or the mill runs rough and the cause is not obvious, an RMS technician can come to your plant and diagnose it on the machine.
What a troubleshooting visit covers
On a troubleshooting visit we measure the groove profile, check roll gap and differential, inspect bearings and drives, review your operating settings against the material you are running, and identify whether the fix is sharpening, a corrugation change, a mechanical repair or a process adjustment. You receive a written assessment and a recommendation, not just an estimate.
On-site troubleshooting is available for every brand in the table above. It is the right starting point when you know the mill is underperforming but do not yet know why.
Full mill rebuilds
For CPM Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, Scherer and RMS mills, we perform complete rebuilds rather than roll work alone. A rebuild covers the rolls, bearings, shafts and journals, drives and adjustment mechanisms, returning the machine to reliable service instead of replacing it.
A rebuild is usually the right call when a mill is mechanically sound but has accumulated wear across several systems at once, and when the cost of a new machine is hard to justify. Ask for a rebuild assessment during an on-site troubleshooting visit.

Endurance Rolls Fit Other Brands’ Mills Too
Every mill in the table above can accept RMS Endurance Rolls. If your Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, Scherer, MPE, Buhler, or Ferrell-Ross mill is on a short sharpening cycle because of abrasive material, you can move to a longer-wearing RMS roll without replacing the machine.
Roll sharpening & maintenance
Frequently Asked Questions.
Yes. RMS provides roller mill service for nearly every roller mill and roll crusher on the market, including CPM Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, Scherer, MPE, Buhler, and Ferrell-Ross. Your equipment does not have to be RMS-built for us to service it. Roll sharpening, re-corrugating, shaft work, and on-site troubleshooting are available across all of these brands; bearing replacement and full rebuilds are available on some. The table above shows exactly which services apply to which brand.
Roll sharpening, re-corrugating and re-fluting, shaft and journal repair, roll balancing, custom corrugation design, and on-site troubleshooting are available for every brand we service. Bearing replacement is available for CPM Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, Scherer, and Ferrell-Ross. Full mill rebuilds are available for CPM Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, and Scherer. Every mill we service can also accept RMS Endurance Rolls.
Yes. An RMS technician can come to your plant, measure the groove profile, check roll gap and differential, inspect bearings and drives, and review your settings against the material you are running. You receive a written assessment identifying whether the fix is sharpening, a corrugation change, a mechanical repair, or a process adjustment. On-site troubleshooting is available for every brand we service.
Yes, for CPM Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, Scherer, and RMS mills. A full rebuild covers rolls, bearings, shafts and journals, drives, and adjustment mechanisms. It is usually the right choice when a mill is mechanically sound but has wear across several systems at once.
Yes. Every brand in our service table can accept RMS Endurance Rolls, including Roskamp, Lonestar, IFA, Scherer, MPE, Buhler, and Ferrell-Ross. If abrasive material is putting you on a short sharpening cycle, a longer-wearing roll may be a better answer than more frequent service.
They describe the same underlying operation. Roll sharpening is the general term for restoring a worn cutting profile. Re-corrugating specifically means cutting a new corrugation pattern into the roll face. Re-fluting is the flour and grain milling term for the same work, where the grooves are called flutes rather than corrugations.
The most common sign is reduced throughput: the mill takes longer to process the same volume. A sharp roll comes to a knife-point at the peak of each corrugation, while a worn roll becomes flat or rounded, loses traction, and can no longer pull rated amps. Rising fines, inconsistent particle size, and changes in motor load are also common indicators.
Service intervals depend on tonnage, material abrasiveness, and corrugation style, so the most accurate approach is to measure the groove profile rather than work from a calendar. As the profile wears, its shape changes measurably. RMS provides the tools to collect measurement samples for our in-house lab so you can determine when it is time for re-corrugating instead of relying on guesswork.
Same-day sharpening returns your rolls within one business day if you drop them off in the morning. Ship and sharpen typically takes 5 to 10 business days in our shop, plus transit time each way. On-site roll exchange is scheduled around your production calendar and usually returns the mill to service the same day the technicians are on-site. Rolls needing bearing, shaft, or journal work require additional time.
Every re-cut removes a small amount of material, but RMS maintains roll diameter wherever possible, which allows a set of rolls to be re-sharpened multiple times over its service life.
Cost depends on roll diameter and face length, the number of rolls in the set, the corrugation specification, and whether bearings, shafts, or journals need work. [Range or starting price pending review with sales—highest-value unfilled item on the page] Contact RMS with your make, model, and roll dimensions for a written quote.
A set of rolls can typically be re-sharpened anywhere from 4 to 30 times over its service life. The range is that wide because it depends on the roll’s original diameter, how much material each re-cut removes, and how aggressively the rolls wear in your application. Larger-diameter rolls have more material to give back and support more re-cuts. RMS maintains roll diameter wherever possible specifically to extend that count.
Yes. If you keep spare rolls, you can install them while your current set is being sharpened. If you do not maintain a spare set, RMS offers on-site roll exchange for many common sizes and brands: we install a refurbished set first, then take your worn rolls back for reconditioning.
RMS services rolls up to 24 inches in diameter and up to [face length] inches in face length. If your rolls fall outside that range, send us the dimensions and we will tell you whether we can handle them.
Yes. Corrugation design is one of the most effective levers on particle size. RMS can increase grooves per inch to produce a finer, more uniform grind, or reduce GPI and adjust the spiral to crush with fewer fines. Our test grinding lab can validate a proposed corrugation against your material before we cut the rolls.
Ship rolls to RMS Roller-Grinder, 27271 Ironworks Avenue, Harrisburg, SD 57032. Call (605) 368-9007 before shipping so we can schedule shop time and confirm crating requirements.

Roll sharpening
Terminology
A reference glossary for the terms used on this page. Roll sharpening, re-corrugating, and re-fluting describe closely related work, and different industries use different words for it. Here is how RMS uses them.
Roll Sharpening
The general term for restoring a worn roll’s cutting profile by re-cutting the corrugation grooves back to a sharp peak.
Roll Re-Corrugating
Cutting a new corrugation pattern into the roll face. RMS can match your original specification exactly or change the pattern to produce a different grind.
Roll Re-Fluting
The same operation in flour and grain milling terminology, where the grooves are called flutes rather than corrugations.
Corrugation
The pattern of grooves cut into the roll face. Defined by grooves per inch, spiral angle, and land width—three variables that largely determine the particle size and fines profile your mill produces.
Grooves per Inch (GPI)
The count of corrugation grooves measured around the roll. GPI is the correct shop term for roll sharpening work; some buyers and suppliers call the same measurement teeth per inch, or TPI. Higher GPI generally produces a finer, more uniform grind; lower GPI produces a coarser crush with fewer fines.
Land
The flat surface at the top of each corrugation tooth. On a properly sharpened roll, the land is nearly zero. As the roll wears, the land widens measurably, and that measurement is the clearest indicator the roll needs service.
Spiral
The slight helical twist of the corrugation along the length of the roll. It keeps material moving across the roll face and prevents streaking.
Differential
The speed ratio between the fast and slow roll in a pair. Higher differential increases shear and changes how the material fractures.
