Get a Better Spice Grind with a Roller Mill
RMS roller mills provide a superior, consistent grind for spice powder manufacturing—whether you need equipment for peppercorn, salt, cumin, or chili pepper grinding.
Our mills deliver a wide particle size range with fewer fines, offering precise control and the ability to easily switch between spices. The nearly dustless design ensures a cleaner operation while producing a high-quality final product every time.
Why a Roller Mill Is Better Than a Hammer Mill for Spices
Roller mills use corrugated rolls to shear whole spices to a desired grind size, while hammer mills use hammers and screens of different sizes. Hammer mills are fine for some applications, but they cannot match the consistency of a roller mill when it comes to particle size.
It’s also easier to change particle size when using a roller mill, making it simpler and faster to go from making coarse ground pepper to finely ground paprika, for example. Another benefit of roller mills is that they produce fewer fines and less waste. They are more efficient and use less energy.
Our standard roller mills are excellent options for spice grinding operations of different sizes, but for the ultimate in control, versatility, and efficiency, we have the VersaMill®.
It gives you full access for clean-in-place (CIP), minimizing downtime, reducing cross-contamination, and eliminating the need for disassembly. Plus, we offer automation options to streamline your process from start to finish.
Case Study: See How an RMS Roller Mill Increased Black Pepper Yield
We’re always excited to do test runs for our customers to show how our equipment can solve problems and improve processes. Recently, we helped a major U.S. spice producer improve the grinding efficiency of black pepper.
Black pepper presents a unique grinding challenge because of its hard outer shell and brittle interior. With this in mind, our customer wanted to increase the yield, reduce fines, and improve efficiency while also boosting flavor by limiting heat generation.
FAQs
In an industry that mills so many different materials, varying particle size is essential. You should be able to produce a coarse or a fine grind, specific to the needs of the final product. Our roller mills can give you a wide range, from 2 to 70 mesh.
It’s easy to switch grind sizes for different particle sizes. For example, switching from a coarse salt to a fine grinding mill for pepper is an easy transition with our machine. We can also help you take advantage of automating your spice processing on your RMS mill. Our recipe management system, Roll Gap, adjusts machine variables to produce multiple different grind profiles with the push of a button.
RMS roller mills use precision-engineered corrugated rolls that shear spices cleanly rather than pulverizing them. Unlike hammer mills, which crush material and generate excessive fines, our roller mills gently grind spices to the desired size while significantly reducing dust and unwanted fine particles. This results in a more consistent product with better yield and less waste.
