Recently Acquired a Used RMS Roller Mill? Start Here
If you’ve recently acquired a used RMS roller mill—or you’re considering one—don’t assume it’s production-ready. Equipment sourced from resellers, inherited from another facility, or found online may require inspection or service before running.
At RMS, we support new and existing customers who are running used RMS mills. We’ve also built tools to help you get the most out of them. Fill out the form to download our Maintenance and Spare Parts Checklist and get 10% off your first parts order or call sales.
What to Inspect Before You Hit Start
A used mill may look fine, but hidden wear often leads to inconsistent grind and underperformance during production. Our team recommends checking the following areas before putting any used roller mill into service:

- Rolls: Are the rolls scored, pitted, or worn unevenly? Even minor wear can cause inconsistent particle size and production inefficiencies. If needed, RMS can recorrugate or replace them.
- Bearings: Check for any grinding noise, heat, or play in the shaft. Worn bearings lead to vibration, downtime, and damage to other components.
- Roll Gap System: A mill is only as good as its precision. Roll gap adjustments should be smooth and repeatable. If not, recalibration or a gap positioning upgrade may be necessary.
- Belts and Pulleys: Loose or cracked belts reduce efficiency and put extra strain on your drive system. Misaligned pulleys can also damage motor components.
- Drive Motors: Confirm compatibility with your production line and power source. Motors on used grain roller mills may have been swapped or modified.
- Magnets and Scalpers: Critical for protecting your rolls. Ensure they’re clean, in place, and removing metal as designed.
All these points—and more—are included in our downloadable Used Equipment Maintenance Checklist.
Skipping Inspections Can Cost You
Running a used grain roller mill without a proper check can lead to:

- Product inconsistency
- Lower throughput
- Component failure
- Emergency downtime
- Safety risks for operators
A few hours of inspection now can save days—or weeks—of troubleshooting later.
