The new setup increased Saw Palmetto Florida’s output more than tenfold while delivering consistent product quality and dependable performance.

Grinding saw palmetto berries into a consistent product is no simple task. They’re naturally fibrous and oily, with just enough variation in size and moisture to complicate processing. Saw Palmetto Florida came to RMS looking for an industrial grinding machine that could scale production and standardize results, even with one of the most challenging materials in the nutraceutical industry.

A Niche Challenge in the Sunshine State

Saw palmetto leaves and berries growing on palm trees used in natural supplement production.Saw Palmetto Florida, LLC, is a small, family-run operation in Naples, Florida, specializing in harvesting and processing wild Saw Palmetto berries. They grind the berries into fine powder and oil extract used in dietary supplements around the world.

Before working with RMS, their production relied on older hammer mills and a three-step process to achieve the right grind size. The system worked, but just barely. It couldn’t keep up with rising demand or deliver the uniform particle size needed for efficient extraction.

“When I came back on board, the RMS equipment was still being installed,” says Jon Foege, Sales Manager and Operations Lead. “The goal was to handle a larger volume of material and get a consistent particle size for our process.”

Finding the Right Fit

Before they could scale production, the team had a key question: Can saw palmetto be crushed in a way that preserves its natural oils and produces a consistent grind? For RMS, solving the problem took more than a standard fix. It needed a custom approach.

We recommended a quad pair roller mill, a type of industrial grinding machine designed for precision and control. Unlike hammer mills that rely on impact, roller mills use compression and shear to deliver consistent particle sizes. That gentle, controlled motion makes all the difference when processing botanicals and sensitive natural materials.

Despite the lack of prior data on grinding saw palmetto berries, our engineering team worked closely with their operations crew to set the parameters and train their staff for optimal results.

Big Blue and a Big Leap in Performance

Once installed, Saw Palmetto Florida affectionately nicknamed their RMS mill “Big Blue” for its size and distinctive blue finish. What started as an upgrade turned into a complete production transformation.

“We were actually pleasantly surprised—I’d say overwhelmingly surprised—at how much volume we could create,” Foege recalls. “We improved our output by a factor of 10x or a little more, and that wasn’t at the cost of standardizing the material. We had a great, standardized particle size.”

The industrial grinding machine delivered consistent results without overheating or breaking down. With the help of a cable-based delivery system and material spreader, the mill now produces a smooth, even distribution across all rollers. Their operators say it runs more like a jog than a sprint—a testament to its engineering and efficiency.

RMS designs each system for the environment it serves, from carbon steel builds for industrial durability to full stainless steel mill configurations for food-grade or specialty applications. For Saw Palmetto Florida, that meant a rugged quad roller mill built for reliability and long-term performance.

Support Beyond Installation

RMS stayed closely involved even after installation. Our technicians trained their staff on parallel setup, gap adjustments, and ongoing maintenance. For a small operation with numerous moving parts, that level of support had a big impact on day-to-day efficiency.

“My experience and our company owner’s experience working with RMS has been a very positive one,” Foege says. “We had a lot of questions during setup, and RMS was there at every step. They sent an operator to train our team on maintenance, alignment, and setup—and helped us integrate the system smoothly into our process.”

The success of Big Blue has been so strong that Saw Palmetto Florida is already working with us again—this time to support a biochar startup that will use RMS equipment for milling and pelletizing. It’s a completely different material, but as Foege notes, RMS already has the data, the process, and the experience to make it happen.

Partnering for the Long Term

Strong results start with reliable equipment and trusted partners. Our collaboration with Saw Palmetto Florida shows how even the most specialized producers can achieve industrial-scale success with the right equipment and expertise.

For Foege and his team, the relationship is more than transactional. “We see RMS as a partner, not just a supplier,” he says. “They know their equipment, they’re transparent about what’s possible, and they’re genuinely great people to work with.”

From hammer mill limitations to a 10x increase in output, Saw Palmetto Florida’s story proves that niche producers can scale efficiently when the right industrial grinding machine meets the right technical support.

Whether you’re producing botanical extracts, powders, or precision-milled materials, RMS can help you achieve consistent performance at any scale, just like Big Blue did for Saw Palmetto Florida.
