Challenge

American Peat Technology needed a reliable way to break down pelletized peat into tightly controlled crumble sizes so the material could move properly through agricultural air seeding equipment.
Solution

RMS provided an industrial roller mill designed for precise peat pellet size reduction, allowing operators to adjust roll gaps and maintain consistent particle sizing.
Result

The RMS system now delivers dependable particle size reduction equipment performance with minimal operator intervention, helping the company maintain consistent output and stable production.
Choosing the right particle size reduction equipment can shape how efficiently a production line runs, especially in industries where particle uniformity matters. For companies producing agricultural materials, even small variations in particle size can affect downstream performance.
American Peat Technology (APT) faced exactly that challenge. The company needed a reliable way to break down pelletized peat into a consistent crumble size while maintaining tight tolerances for agricultural applications. After adopting an industrial roller mill from RMS Roller-Grinder, the team gained a dependable method for producing uniform particles and maintaining the required particle size.
Francis Dierickx, Product Development Manager at American Peat Technology, shared insight into the company’s experience with RMS equipment and how it supports their peat processing operation.
About American Peat Technology
American Peat Technology focuses on developing materials used in agricultural and environmental applications. One of its primary products supports legume and pulse crop farming.
“Our main product is an inoculant carrier for the legume and pulse crop farming industry,” Dierickx explained. “We make a small particle out of peat and biochar that moves nitrogen-fixating bacteria for crops like chickpeas or lentils.”
These inoculant carriers help deliver beneficial bacteria that support nitrogen fixation in crops. The product must move efficiently through modern planting equipment used by farmers.
APT primarily serves growers across the Canadian prairie provinces. In addition to agricultural products, the company works with water filtration media and turf grass soil amendments, which create a range of material handling and processing needs.
Why Precise Size Reduction Matters in Peat Processing
For APT, size consistency is not simply a quality preference; it’s a functional requirement for the product to perform properly in agricultural equipment.
APT begins by forming peat into pellets. Those pellets must then be broken down into a uniform crumble so farmers can apply the material through air seeders.
“We make a small particle of peat by pelletizing it,” Dierickx said. “But that large pellet needs to be sized within about a 10th of a millimeter with precision.”
That tolerance requirement led the company to evaluate specialized particle size reduction equipment capable of delivering consistent output.
A peat roller mill controls particle size through adjustable roll gaps while maintaining steady throughput. It cracks pellets into a uniform crumble instead of creating excessive fines, producing particles that flow easily during application.
Why Roller Milling Was the Right Approach
Before choosing roller milling, the company evaluated other ways to break down pelletized peat, including hammer mills and ball mills. Both created challenges.
“Ball mills create too many fines,” Dierickx noted when discussing earlier processing trials.
Excessive fines can affect product quality and reduce the usable portion of the material. The goal was a controlled fracture rather than aggressive grinding.
Using an industrial roller mill, APT can precisely adjust roll spacing to crack pellets into uniform particles. Operators fine-tune the gap using a feeler gauge and manual adjustment.
“We adjust the roll gap with a wrench until the feeler gauge is just touching across the roll interface,” Dierickx explained.
That straightforward process allows the team to maintain tight particle specifications without constant adjustments.
For APT, the system delivers reliable peat pellet size reduction while keeping the production line stable and predictable.
Day-to-Day Performance and Operator Experience
One of the most noticeable outcomes after implementing RMS equipment has been operational consistency. As long as input material remains steady and foreign debris stays out of the system, the mill runs reliably with minimal intervention.
Maintenance is relatively simple. Most routine work involves monitoring bearing temperatures and keeping lubrication flowing so components continue operating smoothly.
Operators also report that the machine requires very little hands-on control once the process is dialed in.
“I mean, there’s not much to operate. You just turn it on.”
That simplicity helps production teams maintain consistent peat pellet size reduction without complicated adjustments.
